What is ENGAGE?

ENGAGE was a 2-year project (Jan 2018-Dec 2019) co-funded by the European Commission under the Daphne Programme, which aimed to increase the potential of perpetrator programmes to prevent and reduce domestic violence against women and children by improving the quantity and quality of (self-) referrals to these programmes through a coordinated multi-agency response that prioritizes victim safety. ENGAGE Webinar with Heinrich Geldschläger (CONEXUS)

Webinar Details

In this webinar, we shared the ENGAGE Roadmap & Training, developed to train frontline professionals (e.g. healthcare workers) to engage, motivate and refer perpetrators to perpetrator programmes.

We also looked at lessons learned and evaluation results from the ENGAGE pilot implementation in France, Italy and Spain - enabling participants to critically evaluate their own referral and training procedures, and to gain an understanding of unused potentials.

Facilitator

Heinrich Geldschläger, WWP EN Treasurer, is a German psychologist and psychotherapist. He is currently living and working in Barcelona as Research Manager at Conexus Association. For almost 20 years, he has been active in perpetrator interventions - working directly with men, coordinating services, delivering presentations and trainings, and doing research.

Our Work?

The main deliverable of the project, the ENGAGE Roadmap for frontline professionals working with male perpetrators of GBV to ensure a coordinated, multi-sectoral response for the provision of services for perpetrators will be evidence-informed, human-rights-based and culturally-sensitive in order to contribute to strengthen regional and national capacities.

The Objectives?

  • to improve the capacity of frontline professionals to provide a coordinated, multi-agency response and referrals to male perpetrators of gender-based violence through the development of a comprehensive Roadmap and a corresponding Training package
  • to improve the coordination between frontline services and perpetrator programmes

The Partners?

Conexus, Spain: Project Management; Implementation and evaluation of the ENGAGE Roadmap and the Training module in the four partner countries (Spain, France, Italy, German)

Psytel, France: Development of the ENGAGE Roadmap for frontline professionals, with focus on screening and referral to specialised perpetrator programmes

CAM, Italy: Development of the ENGAGE Training module for frontline professionals, with focus on screening and referral to specialised perpetrator programmes

Association Terres a Vivre, France: Implementation and evaluation of the ENGAGE trainings

WWP EN, Germany: Dissemination of the ENGAGE Roadmap and other project deliverables through the partner country networks, in the EU and throughout the European Region via the extensive WWP EN and UNFPA networks

Why is this Project Important?

This project is innovative at a European level because frontline professionals have not been systematically trained in referring perpetrators to services in a coordinated manner. Furthermore, the project will combine feedback from both perpetrators and frontline professionals in order to ensure that both service providers and the perpetrators are involved and represented in the Roadmap. Furthermore, the Roadmap will provide frontline professionals with key motivational triggers to assist them in motivating perpetrators to initiate and perservere in the behavioural change process.

Expected Results?

  • Improved safety of women and children victims by promoting a coordinated multi- agency response and referral pathway for perpetrators of GBV;
  • Improved knowledge, skills and abilities of frontline professionals to adequately address perpetrators of GBV and refer them to specialised perpetrator programmes;
  • Increased awareness of the ENGAGE Roadmap at the EU level through WWP EN, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union.
